New Hampshire

NH Utility Rebates (NHSaves Program)

Available to electric customers of the participating utilities. Equipment must meet minimum efficiency requirements (e.g., specific SEER2, EER2, HSPF2 ratings).  Customers who currently heat primarily with permanent electric resistance heat (e.g., baseboard, electric furnace) and switch to a qualified heat pump may be eligible for significantly higher rebates. Visit the NHSaves website and check the specific programs offered by your electric utility (Eversource, Liberty, Unitil, or NH Electric Co-op) for the most current efficiency requirements and rebate application forms. 

Credit or Rebate

 $250 per ton (or more, depending on the utility/program). $85 for wifi thermostat.

Maine

Efficiency Maine Residential Heat Pump Rebates

The rebates are tiered based on your income, with higher incentives for low- and moderate-income households. Some notes on eligibility here. The heat pump(s) must be sized to meet a high percentage of the home's peak heating load and be used as the primary heating system throughout the heating season.  There may be specific requirements regarding the type of heat pump (e.g., single-zone vs. multi-zone) and the building's current heating fuel (e.g., buildings with a natural gas utility account may be ineligible).

Credit or Rebate

 $3,000 - $9,000 lifetime maximum rebate per housing unit (determined by income level)

Federal Tax Credits (Available through 2032)

The Energy Efficient Home Improvement Credit (25C)

This is a non-refundable tax credit that you claim when filing your federal income taxes (using IRS Form 5695). Applies to equipment and installation costs. Must be an existing home and your primary residence. Equipment must meet or exceed the highest efficiency tier set by the Consortium for Energy Efficiency (CEE). 


Important: You can claim this credit annually through December 31, 2032. 

Credit or Rebate

30% of project cost, up to a maximum of $3,200 per year. 

IRS (25c)

Residential Clean Energy Credit (25D)

This is a non-refundable tax credit for renewable energy property installed in your home (geothermal heat pumps). Applies to equipment and installation costs. Applies to both primary and secondary residences. The 30% rate is in effect through 2032, after which it steps down. 


Important: You can claim this credit annually through December 31, 2032.

30% of the total cost (no annual dollar limit)

Federal Rebate Programs (Coming Soon - State Administered)

Home Electrification and Appliance Rebates (HEAR)

The IRS also created a high-value, income-based rebate programs administered by the states, which New Hampshire and Maine are in the process of launching. These are NOT currently available in, but are anticipated to launch by early 2026.


The idea is to create Point-of-Sale rebates for new appliances. Available to households with income ≤150% of the area median income (AMI). Rebates are higher for lower-income households.

Up to $8,000 for a qualified heat pump system.

Local Tax credit Programs

Example: Sustainable Auburn Matching Rebate Program

The program was designed to double an Auburn, ME homeowner's Efficiency Maine heat pump rebate. Funds were made available through the City's American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) allocation. The primary qualification for eligibility is proof of receiving an Efficiency Maine rebate. This effectively makes the state rebate the qualification for the local match. 


As of March 2025,  the city paid Auburn residents $451,685 in matching rebates! 


Check with your town's building code enforcement office to see if a similar program exists.
